Manhattan Beach sits at the far eastern end of Coney Island. In the late 1800's it was the most exclusive and expensive section of the resort. Two enormous, ornate wooden hotels, the Manhattan Beach and the Oriental, had broad piazzas that looked over lawns and flower beds, to the beach and sea. The Manhattan Beach Hotel popular was popular with theatrical groups, and when the hotel tried to introduce tennis courts, it met with disapproval.
The other large hotel was called the Oriental and had a summer clientele that was more political.
